Xbox Game Pass gains new free AAA fighter today with a near-perfect rating from players

Xbox Game Pass subscribers can play a highly rated AAA game for free today, with a near-perfect score from a beloved fighting franchise that was first released by SEGA well over 20 years ago.

The beloved fighting franchise in question is Virtua Fighter, a classic arcade game that made its debut in 1993 before arriving on consoles across multiple generations, appearing on platforms such as the SEGA Saturn, PlayStation 2, Xbox Series X/S and more.

The most recent game in the series is Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage, released in October 2025 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, and then on the Nintendo Switch 2 earlier this year.

Today, Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage has arrived as part of the September 2026 Xbox Game Pass inclusions, and if you’re a fan of 3D fighting games such as SoulCalibur, Tekken and Dead or Alive, this is a free game not to be missed.

More specifically, Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage is available to those who subscribe to the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Xbox Game Pass Premium, and PC Game Pass tiers. It’s very likely that it will come to the Essential tier, but that could be towards the end of this year or early 2027.

Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage is somewhat of a remaster of the game that was originally released in 2006. This version of the game, developed by the Yakuza and Like a Dragon team, RGG Studio, comes with a whole host of modern improvements and features.

Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage has a brand-new single-player story mode, full crossplay across all platforms, new moves, combos and various quality-of-life gameplay tweaks, and more. It also has rollback netcode, which should make online play a much smoother experience.

Has Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage been well received by players?

On the PC platform Steam, Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage is rated as “Mostly Positive” from over 1,800 user reviews. On the aggregate website Metacritic, it scored a somewhat respectable 7.8. However, it’s scored the highest on the PlayStation Store, with a rating of 4.5/5 from the community.

At this time, we don't know how long Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage will remain on Xbox Game Pass, but hopefully, it will be included in its library for many months to come.
