Grand Theft Auto VI fans have been treated to seven new gameplay details ahead of the November release, and it’s mostly stuff that wasn’t seen in last month’s Extended Look.
We went for many years without so much as a lick of information about Grand Theft Auto VI outside of what was seen in the trailers, but now it seems like we’re getting an abundance of info courtesy of Rockstar Games and those who have seen the game in action.
One of the most detailed interviews for GTA VI has now been published online, where Famitsu spoke with Rockstar co-studio head Rob Nelson who revealed more about the game.
Here are some of the highlights we can pick out from the interview (translated via GTAVice.net).
Alternative ways to use guns

Advert
Nelson revealed that players opting for a more pacifist playstyle can opt to deliberately miss their shots and fire near an NPC to frighten or confuse them, which may buy yourself time to escape.
We imagine this’ll come in handy for any missions where there are NPCs that you don’t want to harm. Jason and Lucia seem a little bit more level headed than previous GTA protagonists like Trevor or Niko, so it seems like a decent option if you don’t want to kill civilians.
Nelson also revealed that suppressive fire is a thing you can do as well, cutting off enemies from flanking you, returning fire, or reaching an objective.
Home comforts
Nelson revealed that there are many small details inside Jason and Lucia’s home. In the preview, Jason was seen pulling back the covers next to a sleeping Lucia and sluggishly climbing into bed. The next day, you’ll see the characters having their morning coffee.
Nelson says, “This is an extremely small detail, but inside the house you can't just throw things like mugs down wherever you want. It's a space where the two of them live, so you have to carry a mug somewhere it can properly be placed. You can't put it directly on the floor; you have to take it somewhere appropriate and put it down.”
Map details
Nelson revealed that the in-game map will reveal information about certain activities you can do in Vice City, such as finding gang hideouts, showing entry points you can use to sneak inside and steal cash or drugs.
“The map can even tell you how much cash and how many drugs are being stored at a hideout, and you can take stolen drugs to a fence. You can also rob jewellery stores or small banks either alone or as a pair,” Nelson says.
Dress to impress
According to Nelson, there are “thousands of outfits”, a lot more than what was available in Grand Theft Auto V, and you’ll also obtain new clothing items by either purchasing them from stores or completing missions.
“As we also announced when pre-orders were revealed, this game has more customisation options than ever before, including a wide variety of hairstyles,” Nelson adds. “There are countless clothing stores and hair salons scattered around the map. You can cut your hair at a hideout as well, but the customisation options there are limited. If you want to try lots of hairstyles, you’ll have to go to a salon.”
More details about robberies
Nelson also spoke a bit about how robberies work, revealing that you can do these heists either alone or in pairs. He also says that you can go in loud through the front entrance or adopt a sneakier route, and the shop security will affect your approach.
“We approach through the back entrance so we won't be spotted, but kicking the door down would trigger the alarm. We have a snap gun — a special lock-picking tool — so let's sneak inside instead. Once inside, if you destroy the security cameras, nobody can see you. If you disable the security system, the alarm won't go off either. In this way, you can quietly steal cash from the store register. If you simply leave afterward, nobody will know what happened there.”
Stealing cars

Stealing a vehicle and evading police is a lot more complicated in Grand Theft Auto VI compared to previous entries. Depending on the value of the vehicle, stealing a car may require more effort. Cheaper cars you simply need to break into, but more valuable cars later on require you to obtain a digital key cloner and may be fitted with alarms.
“If the car you’re trying to steal is a luxury vehicle, you’ll need the key cloner. There’s also a high probability that it will have an alarm and a sophisticated tracker. Even if you manage to steal it, while you’re driving slowly for a while, the tracker may transmit a signal and allow the police to determine your location,” Nelson says.
Police aggression
Nelson also mentioned police aggression, revealing that police will start searching for your stolen vehicle if the car owner reports it as stolen. They don’t know your exact location, but will begin an investigation based on available information such as your clothing, appearance, and the car you’re driving. This state is called “Heat”, where you remain a suspicious person even after shaking off the cops.
“If you throw away the weapon you were carrying during the robbery, you can lower the level of suspicion at the cost of losing it. If your clothing and appearance are also known, you can escape the Heat by taking clothes off. If you change clothes in a clothing store and disguise yourself, you no longer match the information from the report and can safely escape,” Nelson explains.
“The police search the Heat Area, which is the area covered by the Heat, and as long as you remain inside it, the Heat won’t disappear. But if you can get outside the Heat Area, the pursuing police disappear. Leaving the area entirely is therefore one method of escape. However, you still can’t relax simply because the police have left the scene. If you get into a vehicle that has already been identified, there’s still a risk of being spotted by police.”
