While Tomb Raider fans look forward to playing Legacy of Atlantis next year, October 2026 will also see a launch that fans will want to keep their eyes on.
Thanks to the popularity of the Tomb Raider remasters from recent years, as well as Crystal Dynamics' classic era-inspired direction for Legacy of Atlantis, a huge part of the series' 30th anniversary has been focused on looking back.
As we eagerly await the first mainline game in the series since 2018, now's as good a time as any to look back at the original games that made up the early years of Lara Croft's tomb raiding adventures.
The Making Of Tomb Raider: 1997-2000 by Daryl Baxter is set to explore this in more detail than has ever been shared before.

Set for release on October 30, 2026, the book is a sequel to Baxter's 2021 book The Making of Tomb Raider, which explored the creation of 1996's Tomb Raider and its sequel.
As you may have guessed, the new book explores the development of the Tomb Raider series in the late 1990s, beginning with Tomb Raider III and moving all the way through to the end of the PS1 era with Tomb Raider: Chronicles.
Coming in at 236 pages (along with 133 colour illustrations), the book features insight into the development of Tomb Raider III, Tomb Raider IV: The Last Revelation, and Tomb Raider: Chronicles, which came out during this period, where developers who worked on the original titles explain the blood, sweat and tears that went into making them.

A post from author Daryl Baxter on his website reads: "The Making of Tomb Raider: 1997-2000 has been one of the biggest and most difficult projects I’ve taken on - but it’s been all kinds of worth it. Many involved in these games took time out of their schedules to talk to me about how these titles came to be, some of whom have never done that before. I’m very proud of this book, and you can be sure that not one AI-generated word is in this 90,000-word story."
The front cover of the book, which can be seen above, is designed by Ukrainian artist Inna Vjuzhanina, who has previously worked on The Dark Angel album, as well as the Polish cover of The Making of Tomb Raider.
Pre-orders for The Making of Tomb Raider: 1997-2000 are available now from Pen & Sword's website, where it has a retail price of £35 with an introductory offer of £28.
Hopefully, it should provide you with enough entertainment while you wait for Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, which releases for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5 on 12 February 2027.
In our Summer Game Fest preview of the game, we wrote that "Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is certainly on the right track. That delay was a smart move that’ll result in a smoother, more polished gameplay experience, which is exactly what a reboot of this calibre deserves."
