The Last Of Us meets Far Cry in gorgeous new open-world adventure

This looks so good it's hard to believe it's from a first-time developer

We just got the first trailer for one of the most fascinating-looking games of 2025, and it’s already giving me strong Far Cry and The Last of Us vibes.

A brand new trailer for Forest Reigns, a first person shooter from first time developer and publisher VG Entertainment, dropped a few days ago, and I think it’s already pretty fair to say that what’s on offer looks phenomenal.

The Steam page for Forest Reigns describes it as “an emergent FPS set in post-apocalyptic Paris overrun by an evolving forest and its deadly creatures” - and the “evolving forest” part is the bit that’s got me most interested.

The trailer has a very heavy focus on using the environment during combat, which can help you set up defensive walls, lock opponents down using sentient vines, and even just straight up blow them up by utilising pustules of red goo.

The FPS gameplay itself looks very Far Cry-esque, but the environments look very similar to what you might see in the overgrown sections of Texas in The Last of Us. Regardless of what you can draw comparisons to however, it looks absolutely beautiful.

There’s currently no exact word on the release date for Forest Reigns, although it is supposedly meant to land at some point in 2025.

We also, as of now, only know one platform on which the title is planned to be released on: Steam.

It doesn’t sound like the developers are currently working on either an Xbox or a PlayStation port, but I reckon this is the type of game that would need to gain some traction on PC before it would be release elsewhere.

For the meantime though, you can currently wishlist it on Steam. I’ll personally be keeping an eye on this one, so we’ll update you if there’s any word on a release date or any potential ports.
