Elder Scrolls Players Divided By New Release

Bethesda has announced a new Elder Scrolls release set for later this year, but some players aren’t taking too kindly to the news.

Earlier this year, Bethesda re-released one of its best games with the remaster of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

If anything, it felt like Oblivion Remastered was released at the perfect moment. It gave us a nice break from replaying Skyrim for the umpteenth time, while also giving us our fix while we wait for The Elder Scrolls 6. It’s simply a reminder of how good we used to have it.

At the time of its release, Oblivion Remastered was only available digitally for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. However, that’s changed now with the announcement that it’ll be available as a physical edition later this month.

While fans are excited about the prospect of being able to get a physical copy of the remaster, it does come with a small caveat: the digital deluxe bonuses are only available via a digital download, and aren’t included on the disc.

The wording on the box implies that the main game will be available on the disc without any additional downloads, but the deluxe content that features new quests and items will only be available as a download.

However, it hasn’t been confirmed yet whether the entire game will be available without downloading anything, so we’ll have to wait and see what this means for the release.

Since it requires around 125GB of storage space though, it seems likely that some aspects of the game will need to be downloaded. Even the most expensive blu-ray discs only contain around 128GB of storage capacity, so the game would only just about fit on one of those discs.

“Why make something physical that still requires a download?” writes one fan on Reddit. “Not like that download will be available down the line if you decide to play again in 10 years.”

“What a f***ing joke from Microsoft,” writes another fan. “All this talk about preservation yet all their game this gen on disc requires internet download.”

“I knew this was gonna be the case,” another writes. “I’m glad I held off on pre-ordering this until more info came out. Would of been really cool to have this game on disc but Microsoft gonna Microsoft.”

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered Digital Deluxe physical edition launches for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on 13th October, 2025.
