Techland Is Already Thinking About 'Dying Light 3’

Dying Light 2's lead designer, Tymon Smektała, has been discussing a theoretical third game.

This February was a massive month for big game releases, although it’s easy to forget that given that one of them was Elden Ring, which kind of blew everything else out of the water. But before FromSoftware’s brutal open-world titan landed, we also had the release of Horizon Forbidden West, and Dying Light 2 at the start of the month.

Reception for Techland’s zombie survival was pretty positive when it came out - in his 7/10 review, GAMINGbible’s Ewan praised the game for its “open-world playground that’s filled with epic action, pleasingly brutal combat, and some difficult choices”. It clearly went down well with fans too, because on release day, it had four times more players on Steam than its predecessor did at its all-time peak. So then, it’s probably not too much of a shock that the devs are already thinking about the next game in the series.

Dying Light 2 is positively packed with Easter eggs - check out the compilation below.

The sequel’s lead designer, Tymon Smektała, revealed in an interview with VGC that he thinks a theoretical next game in the series should see the player have more skills at their disposal from the start. “One thing is that if we’re making Dying Light 3, then I would like the main character to start with bigger and better starting abilities and skills,” he said. “We have used basically the same approach in [Dying Light 2] that we used in the first game, where the player was starting quite weak and then developing further."

He continued: “We did something very different in the second one and actually this is something I would like to have corrected when I look at Dying Light 2 from the perspective of three months after the release. So I think in the third game, if it happens, that the character will start with more powers, more skills, more abilities as his basic skill set.”

There was over seven years between the release of Dying Light and its sequel, so chances are we’ll probably be waiting a while yet for a third one to surface. But, there’s no doubt that fans would be eager to sink their teeth into it (sorry) if it happens.
