Stardew Valley’s creator ConcernedApe still plans on updating the game, and wants the next update to make in-game relationships much more dramatic.
At its core Stardew Valley is a farming and life-simulator but its secondary purpose is to be a dating-sim.
Every player has their preference in companions, and why wouldn’t you? Farming can get tiresome and lonely so of course you’d want someone to share your space with.
Players have enjoyed a peaceful existence for now with their fictional spouse but ConcernedApe wants to add a little bit of spice to the mix, specifically infidelity.
ConcernedApe spoke in a recent interview with Game Informer, discussing the “supernatural and mysterious nature of creativity.
Advert
One of his original plans for Stardew Valley was to introduce a more complex relationship system. In the current version of the game you’re caught cheating on your partner if you pursue more than one romance option but the original vision would somewhat encourage the player to be a deviant.
You would even be able to split up existing couples in town after having an affair with one of the characters.
In the interview with Game Informer ConcernedApe said in video games “you should be able to do wicked things.” While this doesn’t confirm the devs plans to add these mechanics to the game in a future update it wouldn’t be much of a surprise.
It’d be an interesting addition to the game to say the least. Stardew Valley has been the steadfast king of cosy games so to spice up the gameplay with a bit more drama would make your somewhat peaceful farming life all the more interesting.
Unfortunately updates for Stardew Valley are few and far between. Long gone are the days of massive expansions so now players get updates as and when ConcernedApe can pump them out.

That’s fine though. Stardew Valley is very much content-complete so anything we get now is just a nice bonus.
If you’re wondering what ConcernedApe is working on at the moment it’s actually quite exciting. It’s basically a spooky successor to Stardew Valley.
Haunted Chocolatier doesn’t have a release date but we’re feverishly waiting for it to get one. As the name implies, instead of a delightful bit of farmland you’ll instead inherit a haunted chocolate factory, where you’ll be able to experiment with new recipes, interact with the factory’s residents and sell your chocolate for profit.
What we’ve seen of the game so far looks delightful and we’re excited to hear more as it continues to develop.
Those looking for a Stardew Valley successor they can play this year should turn their attention to Sunkissed City, which currently has a release date of 2026 and is being made by
Mr. Podunkian, who previously worked on ConcernedApe’s game.
