Original 'Spider-Man' Edited To Remove Offensive Joke

This makes sense, to be fair

The original Spider-Man movie directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire is a classic that helped pave the way for superhero movies that unashamedly embraced their source material. But it hasn't aged perfectly.

That's not hugely surprising, given that Spider-Man is now 20 years old. There are parts of the film that don't hold up quite as well, from slightly shaky CGI to occasionally cheesy dialogue. And of course there's one scene early on which will surely live in infamy.

Take a look at our chat with Tom Holland below!

The film's first act sees Peter deciding to put his powers to the test in a wrestling match with Bonesaw McGraw (played by Randy Savage). During the fight, Peter taunts McGraw by remarking: "that's a cute outfit, did your husband give it to you?"

The clear implication is that suggesting McGraw might be gay is supposed to humiliate and anger him. Obviously not an okay thing to do - and we certainly expect better of Spidey these days.

As such, Variety reports that a recent ITV broadcast of Spider-Man elected to remove the line in question. Rather than speculate on McGraw's sexuality, Peter simply says "that's a cute outfit". And you know what? It totally works. Peter is clearly still taunting his opponent without offending anyone - except maybe Bonesaw McGraw cosplayers.

"We carefully consider the suitability of content we broadcast and appropriateness of language used to ensure that it meets audience expectations, especially when intended for family viewing," ITV explained to Variety.

While this will doubtless ruffle the feathers of that usual vocal minority of mouthbreathers, the removal of one ill-judged 20-year-old line from Spider-Man does absolutely nothing to ruin the movie in the grand scheme of things.
