As a Dragonborn, you have the ability to speak the dragon tongue and it is through your conversations that you end up asking yourself one pressing question: why are there so many men here?
Well, that was definitely one of my questions during my playthrough of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim as every dragon you meet, or kill, on your journey will sound distinctly masculine and be referred to with masculine pronouns.
At first, you start to believe that Bethesda may not have spent the time to explain why this is the case during the game.
However, if you happen to read the books scattered throughout the lands of Skyrim rather than hoarding them to display in your house, you will learn that the answer has been in front of us all this time.

According to a book titled ‘There Be Dragons’, “there is no credible story for how the dragons came to be”.
“Eternal, immortal, unchanging, and unyielding. They are not born or hatched. They do not mate or breed. There are no known examples of dragon eggs or dragonlings,” the book reads.
Put simply, from a lore perspective, dragons are genderless beings that simply exist without any rhyme or reason. As a result, they do not reproduce and therefore, gender does not matter and dragons are neither male nor female.
We can assume that the dragons in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim all sound masculine as a game design choice as bringing in a larger cast of male and female voice actors would have been a lot more time consuming.

However, as far as the lore goes, dragons such as Paarthurnax or Alduin have no gender and so it is not the question as to why there are no female dragons in Skyrim after all.
This discovery also goes to show how much lore we may be missing out on by skipping the books scattered around the land so when you inevitably head into your next playthrough of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, maybe spend some time seeing what else you can uncover.
