Skyrim players can now enjoy a brand new free quest that adds a new location to explore at their leisure.
The Elder Scrolls VI is still nothing but a pipe dream, but now is the perfect time to fill out your Skyrim hours with the variety of free mods available.
If you’ve already played through some of the best Skyrim quest mods already, a new release may be one to put your eyes on next.
Titled Knights of the Dawn, the mod features a large quest which takes you to a new location in the mountains of the Reach. Here, you find the city of Highcastle, a strong fortress built by the titular Knights of the Dawn.

These Knights swear fealty to the Daedric Prince Meridia, serving to banish any evil that corrupts the light she bestows on the world.
According to the mod’s creator AnonymousNPC, the quest is currently in a beta state after being on and off development for six years. Starting in 2020, the mod began as a new player house which masqueraded as a quest mod.
“Over 8 months I poured my soul into building the levels and worldspaces of Knights of the Dawn, but there was always one thing that bothered me,” AnonymousNPC stated.
“I was mostly only using vanilla assets and modders' resources, and the mod was never really reaching the potential I wanted. So I started learning 3D modeling, and invested all my time into it.”
AnonymousNPC adds that they eventually lost sight of their original vision for the mod, and various life changes meant they could no longer dedicate their free time to developing it. However, the project was revived again recently, with the modder saying they expect to finish it within a year.

Knights of the Dawn for Skyrim is currently a work-in-progress
As for what’s currently available in the mod, there are several new locations to venture around in, with AnonymousNPC saying they “hope they are fun to explore”.
There are two ways to start the mod. If you haven’t completed the quest The Break of Dawn, you can activate it by retrieving Dawnbreaker and interacting with the pedestal that holds it. After this, a courier will send you a note the next time you enter a city in Skyrim.
The other way to start the quest is to travel to Lost Valley Redoubt and find a Nordic Ruin in the mountains called Yngar Barrow, where travelling through it will trigger the quest to begin.
After this, you’ll be able to explore several of the new areas the mod adds, along with finding unmarked locations that are reached by puzzle solving. In the final version, AnonymousNPC says there will be more quests to do in this location.
Meanwhile, the new Highcastle city currently features NPCs and is “designed fully”, along with a few merchants and a player home you can claim.
As for when you can play the full version of Knights of the Dawn, the creator says it should be finished within a year, so for now it’d be best to keep the mod bookmarked and check back in when there are major updates.
