Skyrim players can now download a new free quest with a gothic theme, offering a new challenge for high-level players.

The Truth of the Old Cathedral for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition is a new release developed by modder Hronnoss, which adds a brand new quest to the game centred all around the Gothic.

Described by Hronnoss as a “short adventure”, the new quest takes you to the grounds surrounding a gothic cathedral, with unique gear and loot to be picked up as you play.

“The Old Cathedral, dedicated to Akatosh, had always been there. Before the fall of the Septim Dynasty. Before the rise of Tiber Septim. Before the founding of the First Empire. It had always been there,” reads the teaser in the mod description for The Truth of the Old Cathedral.

The description goes on to read that “Cradled within a lonely valley, it is secluded by the jagged, teeth-like mountains that form its foundations.

“The valley has never been seen from the outside and is accessible only through a cavernous mountain pass. Over the years, numerous pilgrims have graced its doors. And yet, how is it that no one has ever heard of it?”

The Truth of the Old Cathedral is Skyrim's answer to Dark Souls' huge architecture

The gameplay of The Truth of the Old Cathedral is a mix of combat and puzzle solving, where you must stay on the move during combat to avoid being swarmed by enemies. Crowd control is encouraged here, allowing you to take care of enemy forces without much interruption.

Puzzles, on the other hand, require you to take your time and pay attention to the clues you’re given. You’ll have to keep your eyes peeled for contextual clues, such as readable plaques and tablets that will give you key information.

Hronness also says that the cathedral is not designed to be a player's home, so it isn’t recommended to store any items in the containers. Fair enough.

Aside from that, since the new quest is a high-level challenge, it’s recommended that players hit the level 30–40 range before attempting to complete it, and having over 200 health and upgraded gear is also ideal.

If you are under, however, bring along a follower or hireling to assist you. It’s worth noting that you shouldn't entirely rely on them for support, though.

You’ll also need to stock up on potions, poisons, torches, and lockpicks as they’ll be essential to exploring the cathedral without any issues.

If you’d like to download The Truth of the Old Cathedral now, you can grab it from the Nexus Mods page for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition.

The mod should provide you with a decent distraction while we wait for The Elder Scrolls VI, which is still apparently a few years away, according to recent reports.

Still, with the amount of mods out there for Skyrim, we also can’t help but wonder if players will even want to move over after playing with mods for nearly two decades.
