SEGA Cult Classics Head to PlayStation, Nostalgia is Alive and Well

An unexpected return

New games take such a long time to make these days that we often need to look elsewhere to enjoy ourselves during the longer gaps between exciting releases and one of the best ways to do that is take advantage of older games that are worth a revisit in 2025.

The big companies have started to recognise this en masse and many of them are adding old games to their offerings on console and PC, as well as tasking developers to remake and remaster them for a modern audience.

Though it might not have immediately occurred to everyone, SEGA remains one of the absolute stalwarts of the earlier era of gaming, and they have an extensive back catalogue of games that released for consoles like the SEGA CD and base Mega Drive (Genesis).

Well, as first reported by ComicBook, two of those are about to appear once again, and you may not have come across them at all on your gaming adventures to date - Slam City with Scottie Pippen: Respect Edition and Prize Fighter: Heavyweight Edition.

Slam City with Scottie Pippen: Respect Edition

Slam City with Scottie Pippen is the first ever basketball FMV, in which you'll face off against various opponents in 1vs1's, including the legendary Scottie Pippin of Chicago Bulls fame. Though it wasn't particularly well received at the time, it's a fun little window into the past, with decent enough playability if you do want to give it a go.

Prize Fighter: Heavyweight Edition

Weighing in for the boxing crowd is another FMV game in Prize Fighter. Almost entirely in black and white, players take on the role of "the kid" an up-and-coming boxer who must defeat a series of opponents on their way to claiming the ultimate prize, a world title belted wrested from the grasp of the champion.

Both games are set to release in 2026, though neither has an exact release date at the time of writing. There are also noticeable differences in release strategy, with Slam City with Scottie Pippin set to release on PS4 and PS5, as well as Xbox Series S/X and Nintendo Switch. Prize Fighter will be rolling out as a PlayStation exclusive, with neither set to release on the Switch 2 or PC.

While the choices of games might seem a little bit random, it's very nice to see games from the past resurrected, only from a preservation perspective, if nothing else.
