Resident Evil collides with Subnautica in one of the most frightening games we’ve ever seen

If you have a fear of the deep sea and horrific monsters then this new survivor horror could be your cup of tea or nightmare, depending on your perspective.

Survival horror games like to play on our fears, whether it’s the monsters in plain sight or those that like to play tricks on our minds. Sometimes, the fear of the unknown, in games such as Alien: Isolation is at its most scary when you can’t see what’s hunting you.

Check out the Dark Mass trailer below!

One fear that I know strikes a nerve in millions of gamers across the world is thalassophobia, a fear of the deep sea or just large bodies of water in general. This fear can be so crippling, games like Subnautica are nightmare-fueled.

So, if you’re a glutton for punishment with a fear of the sea but also a fan of survival horror games such as Resident Evil, then the upcoming indie game, Dark Mass might just pique your interest.

Developed and published by Path Games, Dark Mass is coming to PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, and judging by its trailer, it could be one of the most frightening games this year (assuming it launches in 2025).

“Dark Mass is a fully underwater horror game. Explore the ruins of a sunken manor and flee from a curse trapped within for centuries,” reads the synopsis of the game. “Your choices will decide if you escape or join the lost souls of the abyss.”

“Deep, dark water is scary because people are limited in it,” said badgrammar8989 in the comments section of a trailer on YouTube. “In that circumstance, a creature that has no trouble with all of these things, and is larger and more powerful than you, is terrifying.”

“I love this concept, and I hoped to see a game that explored the horrors of the sea and what's in it,” wishbonefishbone commented.

“As a huge fan of SOMA, I find this very interesting. I’m definitely wish-listing it,” replied IdleDeity.

Some gamers in the comments section mentioned that they were put off by a zombie in the water. However, the developers did reply stating that there is more to this type of creature and there are plenty of surprises in the full game.

Dark Mass does not have a release date at the time of writing but be sure to wishlist it via your platform of choice to be notified of its launch.
