Although Capcom is still yet to officially announce the next Resident Evil entry - assumed to be Resident Evil 9 - rumours surrounding the project have circulated online for many years.
Not only that but a recent rumour has revealed that Resident Evil 9 may have started off its life as a very different game than what we are used to.
The rumour comes courtesy of Dusk Golem, a notable Capcom insider who took to social media just last week to share this surprising news.

They reveal that Resident Evil 9 was originally planned to be a “big open-world multiplayer” title, making it the complete opposite to other entries in the franchise which usually follow a linear single-player experience.
However, with Resident Evil 7 following this linear style of storytelling but not performing well when it came to sales, it seems as though Capcom originally planned to try something different with Resident Evil 9.
"So RE9 originally started development in 2017 ... after RE7 underperformed at launch to Capcom's expectations.
RE7 went on to have a huge tail in sales, but this was a bit reactionary," Dusk Golem shared.

"And the original version of RE9 was trying to be the opposite of RE7, ie, a big open world multiplayer game."
However, after the surge of sales for RE7, Capcom reportedly went back on its open-world plans to give fans the style of game they are more used to.
"RE9 originally starred Leon & Jill in a fictional island based off Singapore,” Dusk Golem continued.
“HOWEVER, AGAIN, this is the old RE9, the project got a pretty heavy reboot in 2021 around the time Village came out, though a few things stayed the same like Leon is still the main character.”

This would imply that Jill also got cut and may or may not star in Resident Evil 9 when it is eventually released and this is something that many fans are not happy about.
“Hilarious how much Jill is loved as a character by fans and how much Capcom despises her and favors Chris, who isn't popular with fans at all,” one user said over on r/GamingLeaksAndRumours.
FurryPhilosifer added, “This kind of direction, with stuff like Resistance and RE:Verse they kept trying to make a thing, it's kind of a miracle the main games have been so good for the past decade.”
Of course, Dusk Golem’s comments should be taken with a pinch of salt but hopefully, Resident Evil 9 will have settled on a genre when it is finally announced and released in the future.
