Fans are divided over the prospect of Red Dead Redemption 3, a game yet to be announced by Rockstar Games.

Both Red Dead Redemption titles from the GTA VI developer, Rockstar Games, are considered to be two of the best games of all time, beloved by fans and critics alike. For example, 2018’s Red Dead Redemption 2 scored a whopping 97 on Metacritic, and its 2010 predecessor scored 95.

However, when a series has earned such high critical acclaim across the board, expectations also rise. Take Half-Life and Half-Life 2, for example, two games considered to be all-time greats.

It’s widely believed that one of the reasons we’ve not seen Half-Life 3 is that it will be nearly impossible to not only meet the standard set by the previous games but also the lofty expectations of fans. Can you imagine if Half-Life 3 received a score of eight? Some might unfairly consider that to be a flop.

Can Red Dead Redemption 3 live up to expectations?

That could be a similar case for Red Dead Redemption 3, should Rockstar Games decide to release it after GTA VI. I think it’s fair to say that Red Dead Redemption 3 will arrive at some point, but the expectation of it to achieve no less than a 10/10 would be through the roof.

This has been a topic of conversation with Red Dead Redemption fans on Reddit, responding to the words of Rockstar Games co-founder, Dan Houser, who is no longer with the company.

“It’s like Rockstar is afraid of its own success. It made a game so good that it can’t compete with RDR3. Let's hope Rockstar changes its mind,” exclaimed tanks137.

“Imagine the weight on your shoulders of an RDR3, especially with the many directions it can take, which can be a success, or a complete disaster,” added Hipfire_Toni08.

“I'm hopeful as long as they get some great writers from last time involved and avoid AI,” said AlertStrength3301.

“A third one would either have to be a prequel to a literal prequel to work, or it would have to be a sequel with Jack, which is not really actually a western anymore,” explained MrBlueWolf55.

In my humble opinion, if Rockstar Games were to release a new game in this series (and I think it will), I don't think it will have a number in its title.

It could be Red Dead (insert name), as we’ve not only seen with Red Dead Redemption but also 2004’s Red Dead Revolver.

If we hear news on Red Dead Redemption 3, we’ll be sure to let you know.

As for Grand Theft Auto VI, it currently has a release date on 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
