Red Dead Redemption 2 fans surprised with new free mode

Red Dead Redemption 2 fans surprised with new free mode

Red Dead Online had all the potential

Red Dead Redemption 2 is known as one of the best and most beloved video games of recent times but it’s a shame the can’t be said about its neglected online mode. Well, at least when it comes to Rockstar Games from the many perspective of fans.

When Red Dead Redemption 2 was released in 2018 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, then the following year on PC, it became one of the most critically acclaimed games ever surpassing its 2010 predecessor with an almighty score of 97 on the aggregate website Metacritic.

Alongside the launch of Red Dead Redemption 2 was its returning online mode and fans were excited to explore the Wild West world with other players causing all sorts of mayhem. While it may have been unrealistic for Red Dead Online to share the same success as GTA Online, fans at least hoped that Rockstar Games would at put maximum effort in to help it thrieve.

Sadly, Red Dead Online did not benefit from the expansion-sized content updates as GTA Online and players would have to make do with underwhelming events which sparked the #SaveRedDeadOnline campaign. Then in 2022, Rockstar Games announced that it would effectively end all hope of Red Dead Online receiving substantial content support as its focus shifted to the development of GTA VI.

What made things worse for fans is that despite Rockstar Games seemingly giving up on Red Dead Online, GTA Online continued to be spoiled with fantastic content that even a silver-spooned firstborn would be envious of.

However, while it's not the huge content update that fans would have hoped for, Rockstar Games has surprised fans with an update for the Featured Series which will reward players with 4x XP by partaking in its five featured modes as well as new cosmetics to earn for completing in-game objectives.

The five featured modes are Team Shootout (30 April to 6 May), Capture Series (7 May to 13 May), Hardcore Last Stand (14 May to 20 May), Bow and Arrow Series (21 May to 27 May) and finally, Explosive Series (28 May to 3 June).

Those who compete in the Featured Series will also be rewarded with 10 Gold Bars, a Prestigious Bounty Hunter License, Butcher’s Table, Collector’s Bag or the Naturalist Sample Kit.

Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online are out now on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Both are also backwards compatible with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
