Red Dead Redemption 2's ability to confound and surprise did more to set it apart from other games than anything else. It has beautiful landscapes, but so do other games. It has a great story and memorable characters, but again, so do other games. What no other game in history has been able to do as well as the Red Dead sequel is pack as many small details and mechanics into one package.
From the outset, players have been scouring the map, items, buildings and locations to understand everything the game has to offer. As such, it seemed a reasonably safe bet that most, if not all, of the major mechanics had now been discovered and used a thousand times over.
From horse testicles shrinking in cold weather to Arthur's facial hair growing in real-time, the player base had seemingly done it all.
So the idea that a pretty major customisation feature would be missed by the masses up to now is unlikely, but not impossible, as it turns out.

Over on Reddit, one player pointed out their discovery after seven full playthroughs, wherein they realised that there is a modify button when changing clothes. This allows players to change exactly how Arthur is wearing the items, rather than the items themselves. Whether that's a classic cowboy open shirt or rolled up sleeves for a hard day's work, it massively deepens the available aesthetic options.
As one user commented, Red Dead won't hold players' hands in finding these things: "This is definitely a game that rewards the observant while punishing the casual. Nothing wrong with being a casual player, but you will miss out on quite a lot due to the nature of things not being spelled out."
So, next time you fancy taking a stroll through the old west, have a gander and the clothing options and see if you can do it with a brand new look.
