Massive New PlayStation 5 System Software Available Now, Here's What it Does

Before downloading the almost 1GB update, here's what you need to know.

The latest PlayStation 5 update is a big healthy boy, and Papa Sony must be very proud of what it has made.

The version 21.02-04.51.00 firmware update dropped yesterday (8 March) for the newest-generation PlayStation console, and it is a chunky 900MB. If anyone wants perspective of just how girthy that is, it takes up roughly the same space as Dead Cells and the original Grand Theft Auto III combined. Not as big as the GTA 3: Definitive Edition though, because it can only be assumed that all that smoothing takes up 22GB of memory.

Those who want to see something extremely wholesome should check out this dad getting his hands on a very special PS5.

You can download the new update through the system settings on your console - but what exactly are you getting for your almost 1GB of memory space? Well we delved deep into the PlayStation blog to find out, and this is what we rustled up.

"This system software update improves system performance."

Yep, that's all she wrote. Exactly the same dazzling information that we got for the last three updates, then. However, this one is undeniably chunkier than the ones which have come before it, leading to a few theories.

So one of the worst-kept secrets in the industry was the announcement from PlayStation that a brand new State Of Play is coming tonight. The showcase will be 20 minutes long and feature updates and announcements for PS4 and PS5 games.

The new update could be in preparation for some new app, demo, or feature dropping onto PS5 immediately following the State of Play, which would account for its bulk. Perhaps something to do with this new approach to PlayStation Now and PS+? Though as Sigmund Freud once said: "Sometimes a system software update to improve system performance, is just a system software update to improve system performance." Or something along those lines.
