Despite its stock issues and prevalent scalper-related problems, the PS5 has now become the fourth fastest-selling console ever in the UK, GamesIndustry.biz reports. That’s according to data from GfK.
The console has finally crossed the two million sale mark after 98 weeks, which funnily enough, is the exact same amount of time it took the PS3 to reach the same heights. It falls behind the PS4, which took 75 weeks, the PS2 (at 60 weeks), and the country’s longstanding winner, the Nintendo Wii, which took just 57 weeks to sell two million units.

“Given the stock problems surrounding PS5 it is fair to say it would have easily outpaced PS3 to 2m units,” GfK boss Dorian Bloch said. “One thing that is clear, the significantly higher price of PS5 has not hindered sales, with consumers willing to pay the £105 premium that is shown on the average price of both consoles over this 2m unit period. PS5 has delivered the highest revenue for any console at two million units.”

And it’s true - the revenue of the PS5 sits at a whopping £919 million, as opposed to the Wii’s revenue of £358 million at two million sales. So, y’know, it’s a pretty massive difference.
Meanwhile, the fastest-selling Xbox in the UK was actually the Xbox One - it took the 2013 console 104 weeks to reach two million sales (it’s predecessor, the Xbox 360, was only slightly slower at 110 weeks). The Nintendo Switch comes in at ninth place as it took 140 weeks to get two million sales, which is honestly quite surprising given how strong its lifetime sales are.
“The Switch took a relatively long time to reach two million units sold at 2.69 years. However, with the introduction of Switch Lite after 2.5 years and the subsequent massive boost the console received after the COVID-19 Lockdown, plus the fact that system-seller Zelda launches next year, means the Switch is set to add decent numbers to the install base,” added Bloch.
