Man, Sony really gives with one hand and takes with the other, huh? After years of begging, a form of backward compatibility has finally made its way to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
Thanks to PlayStation Plus Premium, which launches here in the UK next month, subscribers will be able to get their hands on a number of select PS1, PS2, and PS3-era titles. However, largely due to the fact that the PS3's system architecture is so different to what came before and after, there are some massive caveats.
Firstly, the vast majority of PS3 titles will be streaming online. This means while the PS1, PS2, PSP, PS4, and PS5 games available through PS Plus Extra and Premium can be downloaded and played offline, you'll need an internet connection to enjoy the library of PS3 games. This is, of course, a massive bummer.

To make matters worse, this means that it won't be possible to access DLC for any of the available PS3 games. This has long been the case for PS3 games via PlayStation Now, but fans had hoped Sony might have come up with something in time for the launch of the new PS Plus. As reported by VGC, this is definitely not the case.
PS3 games confirmed for the new service include F.E.A.R, inFAMOUS, Rain, Resistance 3, Ratchet & Clank: Quest For Booty, and Tokyo Jungle.
While none of the games currently slated for inclusion have particularly substantial DLC, the fact it will remain completely inaccessible (even if you paid for it back in the day) seems like a real slap in the face. Why can't the PS3 just be a normal kid?
