Prey is free to download and play now

The critically acclaimed Prey from Arkane Austin is free to download and play right now.

Roll up, roll up. Prime Gaming users can now grab a critically acclaimed video game for free.

The video game in question is 2017’s Prey, published by Bethesda Softworks and developed by Arkane Austin. This is, of course, from the same studio that brought us the fantastic Dishonored series. On the flip side, they also gave us Redfall, but the less said about the latter, the better.

If you really want to, you can take a look at Redfall in action below.

When Prey launched, it was met with some confusion. In 2006, a video game of the same name was developed by Human Head Studios and published by 2K Games. Prey (2006) followed the tale of Domasi ‘Tommy’ Tawodi who boarded an alien spaceship after his girlfriend was abducted. While not perfect, Prey (2006) was a fun game and deemed enough of a success to spawn a sequel. Announced in 2011, Prey 2’s production did not go according to plan and soon found itself lost in the dreaded developmental hell before it was cancelled in 2014.

Eventually, the Prey IP was acquired by Bethesda Softworks which resulted in Prey (2017), although this latest instalment is largely unrelated to those former games. Unfortunately, despite garnering positive reviews, Prey didn't sell as well as intended. It's a great game though.

Thankfully, as long as you have a capable PC and subscribe to Amazon Prime, if you’ve never played Prey (2017), now is the perfect time, because it’s included in the latest batch of free games in Prime Gaming. However, be sure to claim your free game ASAP, because the offer is only available until 24 July, 2023.

In related news, back in September 2022, Arkane revealed that they never wanted to call the game Prey but were forced to by Bethesda.
