Pokémon fans are gaming’s most dedicated detectives, and the recent reveal trailer of Pokémon Winds and Waves is proving no different.
Every Pokémon game has introduced a new mechanic to keep the turn-based formula and sprawling regions feeling different. Pokémon Sword and Shield had Dynamax, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet had Terastalisation, and who could forget Mega Pokémon from Pokémon X and Y?

Within days of Generation 10’s reveal trailer, first shown to the world on Pokémon Day 2026, fans have joined the dots together with some leaks from last year to figure out information about Pokémon Winds and Waves, and it might’ve accidentally confirmed its most ambitious gameplay mechanic yet.
In the reveal trailer, we were treated to some absolutely gorgeous graphics, including a breathtaking dive (HM08, anyone?) underwater. But it might’ve distracted you - HM02 up with me and take a look at the sky.
According to notable Pokemon leaker Centro Leaks, those fluffy white clouds in the background could be hiding something much more magical.
If you squint, you might be able to make out a ‘Who’s That Pokemon’ outline. Apparently, it’s Gyarados? Personally, it looks more like Dratini or Drampa to me.
It turns out those kinda-Pokémon-shaped clouds aren't just sky-box eye candy. Centro Leaks claims that they are the new equivalent of the Raid mechanic.
There’s Far More Secrets Teased in the Reveal Trailers
If you blink, you’ll miss it. Right at the start of the reveal trailer, we were introduced to the lovely Mr Windychu and Miss Waveychu. I am, no word of a lie, ready to lay down my life to protect these two. We look up from a book, following a brief look at some nostalgic Gen 9 artwork. Below, you can also see the silhouette of a Gyarados in the clouds in this book.

It’s not the first time Easter Eggs have been hidden in the sky. Did anyone else spot the Palkia, Dialga, and Arceus-shaped clouds we saw in Pokémon Legends: Arceus? In that game, it was a neat "blink and you’ll miss it" detail, but it seems like it could become a huge part of Pokémon Winds and Waves.
Fittingly, for Pokémon Waves, the trailer has already confirmed we can dive into the depths of the ocean. To me, the "Winds" side of the coin implies verticality. I’m hoping some exploration mechanic like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’s Sky Islands, but with a Poké Ball in hand. This opens the door for the controversial return of Sky Battles, a mechanic that has been gathering dust since the Kalos region. I liked them, but I think I"m alone in that opinion.

Does Anyone Still Like Raids?
Here is where the community divides. If you mention "Raids" in a crowded room of Pokémon fans, you’ll get two very different reactions.
On one hand, I really enjoyed the Dynamax Raid Dens of Pokémon Sword and Shield. They were "choose your own adventure" gauntlets that felt rewarding and, more importantly, functional. On the other hand, Scarlet and Violet’s Tera Raid battles were… well, a bit of a nightmare. Between the timer glitches, the desync issues where the boss would magically regain health, and the absolute necessity of having a coordinated team of friends for 7 Star raids, I just found them to be a chore.
However, I’d be remiss if I didn’t call out how much I love Terastallization from a competitive standpoint. In my opinion, it offered more strategic depth than Megas or Dynamaxing ever did.
It allowed for defensive pivots that turned the tide of the Pokémon World Championships.
If Pokémon Winds and Waves can take the strategic brilliance of the Tera mechanic and marry it to a fleshed out Sky-Islands-inspired exploration mechanic, I’m all in.
One thing is sure, I’ll be rewatching the Pokémon Winds and Waves trailer over and over again until we get more official details confirmed.
