Marvel's Wolverine promises to be cheek-ier than Spider-Man as ESRB ratings reveal all

As Marvel takes over the box office again, courtesy of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the superhero gang will continue into a new era with Wolverine this winter - but before he bares those fabled claws, there's a bit more tongue-in-cheek in store.

With the Avengers taking over cinema, Wolverine is lined up for a huge return this September, ramping up the gore where the usual heroes lay webs.

Ahead of its September release, Marvel's Wolverine has already begun laying the groundwork for what to expect, starting with a surprising list of playable characters that almost unites the X-Men.

Although the proposed plot has players flaming the title already, an early gameplay trailer upped the ante with the typically savage combat being a real selling point.

Now, though, the ESRB ratings have become public, revealing even more details about what we can expect, and it's already looking like the wolfman will be getting stripped back to his bare nature - literally.

Marvel's Wolverine is going nude

Having already earned a Mature 17+ rating given its extreme violence and gory body dismemberment, the ESRB has revealed that Marvel's Wolverine is more than just a slash-and-dash title with elements of raw buttocks on show.

"Marvel's Wolverine is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB with Blood and Gore, Drug Reference, Intense Violence, Partial Nudity, and Strong Language," reads the rating description.

Yet if, for whatever reason, you were wondering if Wolfie's package is as sharp as his knuckles, you won't get a full frontal canvas, as the nudity will be limited to bum shots.

"A handful of sequences briefly depict a character's exposed buttocks," the rating continues. "The dialogue references drugs (e.g., “It doubled my production of fentanyl.”). The words “f**k” and “sh*t” appear in the game."

Interestingly, it doesn't say that it is James Logan's (played by Australian actor Liam McIntyre) hairy cheeks that we'll see, as this could be extended to other protagonists like Jean Grey (Marvel Girl), Victor Creed (Sabretooth) and Raven Darkhölme (Mystique) could also be getting their kit off on-camera after all being confirmed to be playing roles in the upcoming game.

Elsewhere, the ESRB rating continued to unravel the extent of the gore.

"Players use their claws to slash, stab, and slice enemies; rage modes allow players to enact faster, more destructive combos and slow-motion finishers (e.g., dramatically stabbing an enemy in the head).

"Combat is highlighted by frequent blood-splatter effects, screams of pain, and dismemberment/decapitation. Battlefields are sometimes strewn with torsos and limbs."

All of this bum-viewing would be much cheekier than Insomniac Games has gone before, with Marvel's Spider-Man being much more PG.

But that's what Wolverine is all about, and we can't wait to see him get those claws dirty, in more ways than one.
