'Pokémon Brilliant Diamond' Locks Mythical Pokémon Behind Hefty Paywall

Gotta pay for 'em all

Two powerful Pokémon are finally making their way to Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, but not everybody is going to be thrilled about their inclusion.

In the original Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, a number of extra-rare Pokémon were gated behind exclusive timed events. Obtaining them required a series of complicated steps, and all to fill out those last couple of pages on the Pokédex. It was infuriating.

Take a look at some of the best Pokémon Legends: Arceus wins and fails below!

The good news is that the mythical God of all Pokémon Arceus is being added to Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl without the need for any irritating timed events. The bad news is that to get it in the 2021 remakes, your Switch needs to have save data for Pokémon Legends: Arceus, the open-world RPG that Game Freak released earlier this year. In other words, you need to first buy an entirely separate game just for one single Pokémon. The franchise has been pulling this for years, of course, but people still aren't happy about it.

Assuming you do have Legends: Arceus save data, getting the Pokémon in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl will be as simple as picking up the Azure Flute item and headed to Spear Pillar (where you meet Dialga/Palkia) to battle and catch Arceus. You do need to have beaten the Elite Four and obtained the National Pokédex first, however.

From April 1 to April 30, players will also be able to pick up the legendary Darkrai via a mystery gift event. This one isn't reliant on owning Legends: Arceus fortunately, but you do need to have completed the in-game Cresselia event before you can access Darkrai.
