The PlayStation 7 is already being discussed... by Xbox

Future planning to the extreme

The PlayStation 5 is just over two years old at this point, but some of us are already looking to the future. Maybe a little too far.

Specifically, Xbox boss Phil Spencer recently discussed the PlayStation 7 while talking about Call Of Duty's hypothetical future with Sony.

As I'm sure you know, unless you've been gleefully avoiding the internet and social media for the past two years (in which case I envy you), Microsoft is in the process of finalising a major acquisition of Activision Blizzard. This historic deal would see a number of titan franchises, including Call Of Duty, fall under Microsoft's control.

This has, in simple terms, caused PlayStation to throw a bit of a shit fit. The prospect of losing such a huge series to its main rival has clearly shook the company, to the point that it's currently trying everything to ensure Call Of Duty remains on PlayStation.

At the time of writing, it looks entirely likely that Call Of Duty will not become an Xbox-exclusive franchise.

Most recently, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said that he's willing to commit to a long-term deal that sees Call Of Duty remain on PlayStation, even going so far as to name-drop the PlayStation 7 - a console that is at least 15 years away.

I'm totally open to [making] a contractual commitment to Sony for some number of years, that says, "Okay, we're going to continue to ship Call Of Duty on PlayStation," Spencer said in a recent interview with the Decoder podcast. "I'm totally open to that. No issue at all".

"It's not about at some point I pull the rug underneath PlayStation 7's legs and it's 'Ahaha you just didn't write the contract long enough.' [But] there's no contract that could be written that says 'forever.' This idea that we would write a contract that says the word forever in it, I think is a little bit silly, but to make a longer-term commitment that Sony would be comfortable with, regulators would be comfortable with, I have no issue with that at all".

While it's unlikely we'll know whether or not the PlayStation 7 will still feature Call Of Duty games - or whether or not there will even be a PlayStation 7 - for many years, it's comforting to know Spencer is willing to play the long game, I guess.
