PlayStation users can grab 7 free Far Cry games right now

Few series have the open-world formula quite as nailed down as Far Cry. This is, of course, a weakness just as much as it's a strength.

While the Far Cry series has tried to take the occasional risk over the years with entries like Far Cry Primal and New Dawn, Ubisoft ultimately coasts by on the same old checklist of open-world nonsense. There are bases to take down, waypoints to head toward, and oh so many pointless side quests to get a little extra loot.

That doesn't mean these games can't be mindless, fun ways to spend a weekend though, does it? Certainly, I've never played a Far Cry game and had an outright bad time. And the good news? PlayStation Plus subscribers looking for a new free game can choose between seven entries in the series right now.

PlayStation Plus Extra subscribers can currently download the following seven Far Cry games:

• FAR CRY 3: BLOOD DRAGON CLASSIC EDITION - still one of the best expansions we've ever played, and a wild departure from the base experience.
• Far Cry 4 - Slightly better than Far Cry 3 in some ways... and slightly worse than it in others.
• Far Cry 5 - Worse than Far Cry 4 in almost every way, but still a ton of fun.
• Far Cry Primal - Far Cry but with cavemen is genuinely way better than it has any right to be.
• Far Cry New Dawn - Fallout meets Far Cry in a game that doesn't get anywhere near enough love.
• Far Cry 3 Classic Edition - A brilliant open-world adventure that still holds up beautifully.
• Far Cry 6 Standard Edition - The weakest Far Cry I've ever played, but still some fun to be had.
