Nintendo is often considered the king of handheld gaming, though this modded handheld Xbox would have given the Nintendo DS a run for its money.

Xbox is very much a home-console company, and it’s never really tried to be anything more than that.

Take a look at this awesome trailer for the new Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater remake

Nintendo has always had a hand in the handheld market with consoles like the Nintendo Switch, and even PlayStation has dipped its toe in with the PlayStation Vita, but Xbox has only gone as far as cloud-streaming on mobile devices.

Fans however have taken the idea of a handheld Xbox and ran with it, creating a portable version of the OG console that looks a little weird, but cool nonetheless.

X user Redherring32 posted their bizarre creation online, a real honest-to-God portable Xbox, which they stressed wasn’t a PC handheld like a Steam Deck, or some type of emulator, it’s the real deal.

They said “this is a real motherboard from a real Xbox. It has a 9” 480p display, pure digital video/audio, 100W USB C charge and play, and I'm currently adding WiFi 6 for wireless Xbox Live functionality. Yes, really.”

I built a portable Xbox.

Described as the “first of its kind” the console was shown displaying the Xbox home screen, though footage of Xbox games like Halo running on the console are coming soon apparently.

It’s an impressive build, and fans were incredibly impressed with the amount of effort that went into putting it all together.

With how popular handhelds are it’s a wonder Xbox didn’t throw its hat into the ring around the time of the Xbox 360, but perhaps it just didn’t feel the need or didn’t want to compete in another market.

Nevertheless this portable Xbox is incredibly cool, and I’m dying to see some Halo: Combat Evolved gameplay on it.
