The best Xbox One arcade game announces sequel, dropping next month

The early Xbox One era was the pinnacle of arcade fun, and we miss it every single day. Fortunately, some of the iconic games that made us so many memories live on, and others are even getting brand-new sequels…

One such title is Speedrunners, a multiplayer party game that saw four players compete for first place in a race of superheroes.

For those who never played this gem, it was a 2D platformer where you had to complete laps of the level before your opponents, and like other racing games, like Mario Kart, items could be used to sabotage the competition or give yourself an advantage.

It was great fun to play with friends. A solid choice for the end of a long night, or one to play while you're talking about life. Lots of fond memories were made with this one.

And yet, flying under many gamers’ radars, however, is an upcoming sequel, SpeedRunners 2: King of Speed, which was announced late last month and is due for release in September.

It looks beautiful. A modernised take on an all-time classic that we can’t wait to play ourselves.

The release date is September 3, and it’ll be a day-one title for those with an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription.

You’ve got a month to prepare for the next Speedrunners game, so it’s time to start practising.

You can find the original on the Xbox Store now, and while it’s not downloadable as part of Xbox Game Pass, it can be cloud-streamed with your subscription if you so wish.

Luckily, the full game doesn’t cost too much. You can get the standard edition for $9.99/£8.39 or the Deluxe Edition for a little bit more. The Deluxe Edition comes with additional characters.

Alternatively, it’s currently discounted on Steam and even comes with a free demo. You can play a free demo on the PlayStation Store, too.

Are older Xbox games making a comeback?

You might have heard the news that Xbox is planning to revitalise its backwards compatibility program.

It’s also begun the process by making a few OG Xbox games available on PC as part of your Xbox Game Pass subscription, but more are said to be on the way.

We’d love to see more OG Xbox titles make a comeback, but after all the excitement surrounding the new Speedrunners game, we’re now hoping for a massive resurgence in older Xbox titles.

Xbox Live Arcade 2.0 would be a dream come true, and hopefully, publishers are willing to play ball, as they ultimately have the final say on which games come back and when.
