Christmas has come early for Nintendo fans thanks to a new release for the Game Boy in the year of our lord 2026.
We didn’t have a new release for the Nintendo Game Boy Color on our bingo cards at the start of this year, but one developer has gone all the way with a new homebrew release for the console.
The final official release for the Game Boy Color occurred in 2003 with Doraemon no Study Boy: Kanji Yomikaki Maste, but retro gaming fans have kept the system alive for many years with new unlicensed and homebrew titles that have even received physical releases.
If you’ve ever wondered how the classic Nintendo game F-Zero would have looked on the Game Boy Color, this brand new homebrew release might be just what you’re looking for.

Zero is a brand new game for the Game Boy Color releasing this week
As reported by Games Asylum, Zero is a new game for the Game Boy Color that imbues the spirit of the F-Zero series.
Developed by Rocketship Park, it pays homage to the classic F-Zero games, which combine fast speed and great difficulty, neatly wrapped in a futuristic urban setting. The game has three different cup challenges and nine distinct tracks, each with varying levels of difficulty.
Zero will be released today, November 5th, exclusively on itch.io.
Game Boy Color fanatics will be able to play the game on the original hardware via a flash cartridge, but it’ll also be available to play on an emulator.
“I've wanted to push the beloved Game Boy Color to an approximation of Mode 7 for a while now,” said developer Shane McCafferty.
“The technique was, like all cool things, stolen from the demo scene – the real fun was turning that into something that feels thrilling and fun to play. I hope people have as much fun playing Zero as I had coaxing it from the Game Boy.”
Meanwhile, the game is being published by Thalamus Digital Publishing, with CEO Andy Roberts saying: “It’s always a delight to unleash a new Rocketship Park game on the public, and Zero is no exception. Developer Shane McCafferty has an impressive legacy of Game Boy racing games under his belt. Zero takes everything he learned on titles like Nitro and Hero GP and elevates the genre to new heights – and speeds!”
Previous Rocketship Park releases include other Game Boy homages such as OutRun GB, based on the classic Sega racing series, and BaconBaconBacon, a traditional match-3 puzzler with fun pixel graphics.
Both are based on Game Boy-style graphics, and are excellent additions to any retro gaming fan’s library. You can grab them from Rocketship Park's itch.io developer page.
