Mass Effect has received several surprise N7 Day announcements, but what should be a day of celebration for the beloved BioWare sci-fi RPG series feels more like salt being rubbed into fans' wounds amid news of Mass Effect 5 being cancelled.
Mass Effect fans mark N7 Day on the calendar every year, but it often ends in disappointment. Ever since the next Mass Effect game was officially announced on November 7, 2020, fans have been hoping for gameplay, a release date or just any substantial update. Sadly, celebrations have often amounted to little more than merchandise reveals.
Unfortunately, this year's N7 Day looks like more of the same. With BioWare officially closing and development on the next Mass Effect game coming to an end, perhaps fans shouldn't expect much else but it's for that reason that the merch drop hurts more so than usual.
Mass Effect fans face bittersweet N7 Day as new announcements land
Dark Horse teased on X that a new Mass Effect statuette is scheduled to be officially revealed on November 6, 2026. The teaser didn't reveal exactly what the statuette depicts, but its cryptic wording could hint at something Reaper-related. However, that's purely speculation for now.
This is the latest Mass Effect merchandise announcement ahead of N7 Day, following Youtooz teasing a new collection of collectables.
The timing of Dark Horse's announcement does feel like a tad unfortunate. However, when replying to a fan on X, Dark Horse confirmed that the announcement had been planned long before BioWare's closure and the cancellation of the next Mass Effect game.
Advert
"Was this a scheduled tweet y'all forgot to cancel before BioWare was shut down?" asked Revaks_. Dark Horse replied: "Nope! We had this planned, and despite the news, we wanted to make sure Mass Effect fans still had something to look forward to on N7 Day!"
BioWare may have had bigger N7 Day plans before its closure
Of course, we can only speculate at this time, but it's not beyond the realm of possibility that BioWare could have had bigger announcements planned for N7 Day this weekend.
During last year's N7 Day, not only were we treated to a new Tali'Zorah statue, but BioWare also shared newly revealed concept art, and cryptic messages and clues hinting at a potential Krogan civil war in the next Mass Effect game.
Naturally, this year's celebrations could have led to something more substantial, such as revealing more details about the next game's story, an official gameplay tease or even a release window. Instead, fans have been left with merchandise announcements and leaked footage that appeared to show an early build of the game.
If that was what BioWare had planned, it could have been the substantial Mass Effect 5 update that fans had been waiting years for. Now, unless something drastic happens, we may never see another Mass Effect video game.
Mass Effect fans are still fighting for the franchise's future
Following BioWare's closure and the cancellation of the next Mass Effect game, fans rallied behind a campaign to Save Mass Effect.
A petition was launched by devoted fans, and it has now surpassed 300,000 signatures, according to the campaign's organisers. However, whether this evolves into something more substantial remains to be seen.
The best we can hope for right now is that the live-action Mass Effect adaptation from Amazon isn't the next project in the franchise to be cancelled. The adaptation is reportedly still in development, despite BioWare's closure.
We'd love to see BioWare revived in whatever iteration and for the Mass Effect video game series to be saved, but we wouldn't recommend holding your breath.
