The Division returns with free new RPG Resurgence available from today

Ubisoft’s The Division is back today, and best of all, it’s free-to-play, but it will be interesting to see what this could mean for the mainline series on consoles.

Tom Clancy’s The Division was first released on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2016, and despite having annoying bullet-sponge enemies, it was a fun tactical shooter that blended third-person action, RPG and looter mechanics.

We were then treated to a sequel in 2019, which later received a free new-gen update in 2021 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. However, at least on the PC platform, Steam, the sequel wasn't as popular as its predecessor.

According to SteamDB, while the original game had an all-time concurrent player peak of 114,228, its sequel only managed a measly 27,482. So, it’s understandable that, considering the drop in popularity, Ubisoft might not be overly keen to revisit The Division with a new game.

That was until The Division Resurgence was announced in July 2022, before it arrived on mobile devices on March 31, 2026, but today, it’s available on PC via Steam.

Judging by its gameplay trailers, The Division Resurgence looks like a legit game in the series, and unless someone were to say otherwise, it could probably pass as a mainline entry, rather than a free-to-play spin-off.

“Jump into this free‑to‑play looter‑shooter RPG featuring tactical combat, deep progression, and an exclusive canon storyline, playable solo or with friends,” reads the synopsis of the game on Steam.

The Division Resurgence features challenging raids, loot to acquire, character and weapon customisation, and evolving missions. However, as much as that sounds like a game befitting of its console counterpart, it is essentially a free-to-play mobile game, so expect a heavy focus on in-game purchases.

What is the community saying about The Division Resurgence?

“I've been enjoying The Division 2 since this year's spring sale. Will try out this as well,” said a user in the comments section of the YouTube launch trailer for the mobile version.

“It looks really great so far!” declared ProjectDungeons.

“I downloaded it yesterday. I love it!” exclaimed DAICEBRG.

What does this mean for The Division on consoles?

At this time, we can only guess. That being said, considering the declining concurrent numbers of its 2019 sequel, it isn't surprising if Ubisoft considers The Division Resurgence to be its cost-effective replacement, at least from a production perspective. It’s too early to tell how well it will do on Steam, but it might be worth keeping tabs on SteamDB if you’re interested in concurrent numbers.

It’s also worth mentioning that at this time, Ubisoft hasn't publicly announced any plans to bring The Division Resurgence to consoles. I guess that will all depend on how well it performs on Steam in the coming months. We do know that The Division 3 has been confirmed, but that was a couple of years ago now, and we’ve heard nothing about it since. Hopefully, it’s not been cancelled behind closed doors.
