If you're looking for a new nightmare to sink your teeth into, LNJ Studios' The Abyss Break could scratch that itchy (tasty) hankering you have for the macabre.

2026 has already been a bumper one for horror, especially as we welcomed Resident Evil back into the fold with Resident Evil Requiem.

One of Requiem's big wins was the stealth sections of Grace Ashford's story to give us the kind of skin-crawling horror of RE7, alongside the return of Leon S. Kennedy, allowing action fans to experience the kind of bullet-raining adrenaline spike that RE4 gave us all those years ago.

What if you combined Leon's sections with the biggest franchise of the past 20 years? We know the Resiverse always has great success with its Mercenaries mode, and as Call of Duty has made bank on its beloved Zombies, merging the pair sounds like a match made in heaven.

Now that our pulses have calmed down after playing Requiem, The Abyss Break has popped up on Steam and hopes to deliver a flavour of this in 2026. While LNJ's latest outing admittedly doesn't look quite as harrowing as Team Clout's ILL, we imagine a fair few people will still be hiding behind their cushions.

Escaping apocalyptic worlds is nothing new, and if you've seen the latest trailer for Silent Hill: Townfall, you'll know that the idea is set to return in a big way. Step into The Abyss Break, which is a hardcore first-person extraction game where the brave can go it alone, or you can team up with others (advisable) to explore this 1980s-inspired industrial nightmare. Teamwork makes the dream work, but in a team that only has a maximum of three, you'll have to keep your wits about you.

You're tasked with navigating unstable parallel worlds that have been created by 'the Abyss' during a catastrophe known as the Great Expansion. Waking up in an underground facility with no memory of how you got there, you'll have to complete contracts and scavenge items within a strict time limit. Get carried away with yourselves, and you're in danger of being left behind as reality literally collapses around you.

The Abyss Break teases some pretty sophisticated AI, where those who rush in blindly will be punished for their actions. Sound detection mechanics mean every footstep and every creaking door could lead to an early demise, so those Grace-esque stealth mechanics will also come into play.

Customisation is also key, with players taking control of how they arrange their pouches, armour plating, and support gear. Another nod to CoD allows you to add the likes of suppressors to your weapons to tweak your stealthy loadout.

As we warned, you'll want to creep around; enemies will notice missing items and try to pinpoint your location. If things weren't already hard enough with all of that to contend with, dynamic weather and day-night cycles ensure that "every mission feels unpredictable and immersive."

There's no release date for The Abyss Break, but if you're a horror hound who thinks they're also a sharp-shooting CoD aficionado, you'll want to ensure you've got this one on your wishlist.
