A new free game has launched on Steam, and become subject to a wave of negative reviews, which may or may not hold you back from giving this RPG a try.
Soul Slasher is a 1v1 PvP adventure where players face off against each other, trying to capture the other person’s soul.
It’s a neat concept, and on the surface, it looks to tick a lot of boxes for fans of RPGs, but also hack and slash action games.
A quick look at screenshots, or the official trailer, shows a game that looks like a hybrid of Diablo 4 and Hades, with frenetic combat viewed from an overhead perspective.

Unfortunately, Soul Slasher hasn’t been met with a lot of enthusiasm, and it has led to a ‘Mixed’ rating on Steam, with players putting forth their complaints in reviews.
“No tutorial, awful hit registration and shield charge push is very inconsistent,” said one player, who capped off their review with a scathing, “Such a revolting experience.”
While there are a few positive reviews, complimenting the combat and the visuals, the most popular reviews echo the same statements, issuing warnings to players thinking of giving this one a go.
“Lousy control function,” said one player in their review, while another notes, “Oh lord. No gamepad support, controlling your character with the keyboard will drive anyone insane.”

It’s not helping that players are having to wait for a long time to even match with another user, leaving many to express their frustrations in other reviews.
“I think this game is really fun, but I still can't find matches for like 10+ minutes,” said one such player.
This was backed up by another who comments - after trying to play for around five hours - “10 minutes of waiting for a match. Zero players.”
It seems like this one needs more time in the oven, or a shift in genre to keep players coming back.
