Steam Drops Free AAA RPG, Early Reviews Are Glowing

This Steam RPG comes highly recommended

If you’re looking for a free high-octane game to play on Steam right now with positive reviews, then we’ve got you covered.

Steam is packed with free games to play, whether it’s a AAA battle royale such as Battlefield REDSEC, a gameshow-inspired offering like Fall Guys or an action adventure game like Wuthering Waves.

In fact, there are so many free games to choose from on Steam that it can get a little overwhelming trying to pick out the good from the bad. Because let’s face it, no matter how many good free games are on the platform, it also has its fair share of “asset flips”.

Thankfully, we have at least one free game that might be worth your attention, and it comes highly recommended by the Steam community.

Zone of the Enders meets Devil May Cry?

The free title in question is an action-adventure RPG called Punishing: Gray Raven, developed and published by the studio Kuro Games. After watching its trailer, it kind of reminds me of an extra-weeby cross between Zone of the Enders and Devil May Cry.

“Punishing: Gray Raven is a fast-paced sci-fi action-RPG. You are tasked with assembling the greatest cyborg soldiers the world has known and leading them into battle,” reads the synopsis of the game on Steam. “Unravel the dark truths behind the Punishing virus, push back the Corrupted and reclaim the Earth in this stylish Action-RPG.”

Released on Steam on 3 February 2026, at the time of writing, Punishing: Gray Raven has a “Mostly Positive” Steam user review rating and here’s what some of the community had to say:

“I’ve been playing Punishing: Gray Raven since long before it came to Steam, and I absolutely love this game,” explained Weiss.

“First off, the story is presented as a visual novel and starts kinda quiet - world building and setting the scene - but once you hit about chapter nine, it really starts pulling you in.”

“I have been playing this game since the global release back in July 2021, and the gameplay still amazes me to this day."

"Made by the same dev of Wuthering Waves.....it’s brutal, fast and stylish,” wrote DigitallyRemixd. “It's a hack-and-slash action RPG that takes heavy inspiration from Nier: Automata.”

“Best gacha game out there!” exclaimed a Steam user. “Don't be fooled by the first nine chapters of the story; it gets better. Gameplay is where the game shines the best, legit better with a controller and no UI. The music is rivalled only by OG Arknights, Duet Night Abyss, and Wuthering Waves.”

It’s not all sunshine and roses, however, when it comes to the Punishing: Gray Raven Steam user reviews.

“This really doesn’t feel right on PC. The whole thing still feels like a mobile port — the UI, the menus, the controls — everything clearly comes from a phone,” said Janna.

“It never feels properly adapted for keyboard and mouse, and that gets annoying very fast.”

Punishing: Gray Raven is also available on Android and iOS devices.
