A new free-to-play game on Steam is one of the weirdest things I’ve ever seen, and to be honest I’m not sure what to make of it.
Scrolling through the new releases on Steam, you always tend to find some weird new releases. Real “we came up with this in a dream after eating a lot of cheese” type stuff.
A new game that was released on Steam a few weeks back seems to fit this description. It’s a game I can’t really begin to describe, nor do I even really understand what it’s about.
The best way to describe “硬汉猫猫:手法大师” (or Tough Cat: Master of Technique by its English translation), is that it’s a wave-based shooter where you play as a cat and have to defend the centre of the screen from approaching enemies, which look a bit like slimy ghosts.

Each level is divided into 20 waves where you must repel the attackers, and between waves you get to buy new items and upgrades to make your fortifications stronger as the enemies become tougher.
That’s the gist of it from what I can tell, but I find the game’s illustrations and presentation weirdly fascinating. There are some fun cartoony graphics and the music is quite funky. And it seems to have quite a fun but simple gameplay loop.
Here are a few images to give you an idea of what it's all about.

Oh, and the cat is supposedly based on Sun Wukong, and the game is apparently an adaptation of Journey to the West. Not sure how or why, but that’s what the developer states.
I’m sure it has its audience. Probably more so in China than elsewhere in the world, but an audience nonetheless. I can respect that.
