Steam drops free horror you can download in time for Halloween

Valve lifts the veil off of its Halloween freebie

Valve has a fun little treat in store for fans of the spookiest time of the year, as they’ve just offered up a spine-chilling game on Steam - completely free of charge.

Veil Transfer is a brand new title from developer Daniel Graves, who is generously giving away their first game on Steam for free. Although they only recently published the title, it seems they’re planning to give it away for free forever as it was only “made for fun” (according to Graves).

The trailer for the game on Steam is honestly genuinely impressive considering it’s the first title Graves has published, evoking the same kind of creepy style that was prevalent across PS1 horror titles like the oft-forgotten Echo Nights.

The “Veils” in the game “are a rising threat as they hide within human bodies in order to carry out malevolent will” and “as an NVTP enforcer” the game tasks you to “pick out and execute any Veils who hide among the human population.”

To deal with these threats, you’re allowed to “interrogate, threaten” and “torture” these suspects in a bid to uncover their identities, but failing to do so correctly will cause them to “get revenge on you” once they cross over.

The game is currently sitting at a “Positive” rating on Steam, with one reviewer describing it as “A fusion between Papers Please and SCP.”

Although the combat seems relatively rudimentary, the interrogation aspect of the game seems to be the element that’s impressed users the most.

A couple of different users specifically said that it’s best to go into the experience completely blind, assumedly so you can the most out of discerning the truth behind each of your captives.

Either way, it’s free so you don’t need to take any of these reviewers' words for it. Maybe download it ahead of the 31st so you sit down at midnight with all your leftover chocolate, for the perfect spooky atmosphere this Halloween.
