Steam users can play Far Cry 6 free right now

If you're keen to head to sunnier climates, Steam has the answer – just be prepared for bullets, blood, and mayhem.

If you want to explore a fictional Caribbean island, forced to fight for survival in a bloody conflict, you’re in luck (though, that’s weirdly specific) because Far Cry 6 is free on Steam right now.

Even if you’re not part of the Far Cry fandom, you’ll be aware that this instalment wasn’t as well received as previous outings, with a lot of players criticising its repetitive nature. Yet, despite the harsh reviews it garnered, many fans are in agreement that Far Cry 6 suffered a lot more hate than it deserved. Yes, it wasn’t perfect by any means, but there are solid mechanics included in its colourful story.

Now is the time to learn how to get Far Cry 6's secret ending!

Bearing that in mind, this might be the perfect opportunity for you to see what the game involves. Who knows, you might discover a diamond in the rough…? Steam has the Far Cry 6 demo waiting for you, completely free, as well as editions of the game at heavily slashed prices; the standard edition has a massive 75 per cent off, costing only £12.49.

“Compared to Far Cry 5 it was fresh, it’s cool how you can completely change your setup to get different perks,” said one fan when asked about their thoughts on the game. Surprisingly, a lot of other players also mirrored this opinion.

“I loved it,” started another gamer. “One of the main complaints about the series is that the formula is stale. Compared to Far Cry 5, where you have to do side stuff to unlock the few and far between story missions, I’d say that the mission structure is a lot more appealing as well.” Even when some remark that some of the side missions are “bland”, the majority of the fandom doesn’t dislike Far Cry 6 as much as some would have you believe.

Yet, Ubisoft has quietly killed off the game thanks to its lacklustre reception. You can still play the game (obviously), but it won’t be getting any more updates, which may be disappointing for those who’ve already smashed the main missions. If you can look past that, you’ll find a game that will surprise you, as well as set you up for the inevitable Far Cry 7.
