Steam users have a new freebie to try that’s perfect for Hotline Miami enjoyers, a series that left us too soon.
For those that aren’t aware, the Hotline Miami games are a pair of top-down twin-stick shooters all about unleashing pure, unadulterated violence on any poor soul dumb enough to mess with you.
It combines tight controls, aggressive enemies and an ‘80s vibe that makes it unforgettable once you’ve played it, so it's a shame only two games were made.
Over the years several games have tried to emulate what made Hotline Miami such a success.
One we spotted recently is called PAIN-TO-WIN, an upcoming Steam game that reimagines the twin-stick gameplay of Hotline Miami but with a horror aesthetic.

This is a weird game. Just looking at the screenshots and gameplay footage should make that clear but if you need convincing further the game’s description has you covered.
It says PAIN-TO-WIN is about “ life inside a hostile asylum functioning as a meat grinder”, and we’re definitely getting that vibe.
The description goes on to say: “You play as an organ extractor, earning money by bounty hunting madmen, psychos, and other violent degenerates. The game draws from ugly, uncomfortable PSX-era maniac aesthetics through handcrafted, highly detailed non-pixel art visuals.”

Gameplay-wise though it’s very much a Hotline Miami clone but with the violence dialled up to 11. Hotline Miami was a bloody affair but PAIN-TO-WIN takes things to another level.
With multiple deranged characters to choose from you’ll pick your inmate and tear your way through every word with an assortment of ranged and melee weapons.
After you’ve blasted the asylum’s inhabitants to smithereens you’ll need to pull out a buzzsaw and extract the goodies hidden within. The floors and furniture quickly become slick with blood so it’s not a game you’ll want to play on an empty stomach.
It’s all very Resident Evil-coded but without the zombies, and we already love it.
At the time of writing the game doesn’t have a release date but from what we’ve seen so far it doesn’t look far off completion.
If you’re interested in playing it for yourself you’ll be glad to hear that a playtest is currently ongoing, giving you a chance to not only play the game but also provide crucial feedback on what you thought about it.
Provided the playtest goes well we might even see the game release sometime later this year, hopefully with a free demo included for those who didn’t get a chance to join the playtest.
PAIN-TO-WIN looks like the Hotline Miami successor we’ve been waiting for, and we can’t wait to see more of it as development continues.
