Steam Adds 7 Huge New Free Games, Yours to Keep Forever

A couple of them also look good, surprisingly

You can nab seven free titles on Steam right now, but are any of them even worth trying?

Ehh, we’ll get into it.

Free games and Steam; it’s a tale as old as time. Most of them are terrible. Some of them are alright. A few of them are even pretty decent. Are any of the games on this list pretty decent? Yes. Most of them? Hell no.

As per usual, thank you in advance to the Twitter page Free Steam Games for finding most of these!

Alright, we’re ranking these from worst to best (at a glance), so skip to the end if you only want the good stuff.

Ok, first up we've got Apoclone from developer and publisher R2 Games.

This one is a strategy RPG game that, frankly, just looks sort of lazy. Maybe it's fun to play, but I'm not gonna give it a pass for just throwing some AI-generated models of Tifa Lockheart and Harley Quinn in and calling it a day.

Next up, Fate of Gun by developer chunchun and publisher bobo.

Apparently this is just Buckshot Roulette but worse, which kinda makes me wonder why you’d not just play Buckshot Roulette instead. Not off to a strong start so far.

Project Origin by developer and publisher Rouge Studio is an early-access MMORPG, and it's really putting the "early" into early access by the sounds of things.

Reviewers say it seems fun enough, but the performance is abysmal and it’s terribly optimised. Maybe come back to this one in a month or two, when the devs have ironed out the technical issues.

Here's an odd one: Stormgate, by developer and publisher Frost Giant Studios.

This game is supposed to be a throwback to classic RTS titles, and it was crowdfunded on Kickstarter by some former Blizzard veterans and then delayed until… now. A lot of people were really excited for it, but it seems to have fallen very far from people's expectations– hence the pretty poor reviews it's currently receiving.

Shellborne from student-led team Swarmforge Games is a free-to-play co-op adventure game, and hey– we might just have our first good game on this list.

There aren’t many reviews for this one yet, but every review I could find was very complimentary. And, call me biased but, I have a soft spot for student dev teams so… this one earns itself a decent spot on the list.

Mecharashi from developer BlackJack Studio and publisher HK TEN TREE LIMITED is a free to play turn-based strategy game, featuring cool ass mechs.

I’ve played this one, and I kinda loved it. It’s getting decent reviews on Steam, but the negative ones are mostly people complaining about the free-to-play elements of the game. Personally, I managed to get a lot of enjoyment outta this one without spending a penny, but your mileage may vary.

And finally, we’ve got Cartoon Survivor by developer and publisher Spunge Games Pty Ltd.

This one is a timed freebie, so unfortunately you’re outta luck if you’re reading this article past August 28. However, if you got here on time, the reviews for this seem very positive. Worth a shot (if not just so you don’t get FOMO).

And that’s your lot today, folks.

However, if you keep scrolling down, there will be further free Steam games. And then if you scroll beyond that, there will be even MORE free Steam games… and you can just keep going, and going, and going… until… actually I’m not sure when it would end, so let me know what happens if you find out.
