If you’re a fan of Crimson Desert, I’m going to imagine that you're not short of entertainment when it comes to gaming.
Let’s face it, that open-world is going to keep us busy for months and months.
However, if you do need a change of pace or perhaps Crimson Desert has proven to be outside of your budget or not to your liking, PC storefront Steam has you covered.
Steam Medieval Fest is running from now until 27 April and it’s an unmissable event for those who enjoy the likes of The Elder Scrolls, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, and the aforementioned Crimson Desert.

If you’re not familiar with these types of genre spotlighting events on Steam, there are three main elements.
There are discounts running on medieval games, free-to-play titles within the space are highlighted, plus hundreds of new medieval demos have been released, showcasing both existing and upcoming releases.
It’s with that latter point in mind that I highly suggest you sample as many of the medieval demos as you can between now and 27 April, as you may just find your next play.
Naturally though, it can be daunting having to sift through endless demos. The phrase “spoiled for choice” springs to mind.
To make your life easier, here are seven options, you might want to consider checking out.

Half Sword is a “physics based medieval combat simulator” that features period accurate arms and armour options. Launched earlier this year, it’s garnered praise for its “punishing” progression.

Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era
Due to launch on 30 April, Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era is a prequel set within the Heroes of Might and Magic universe, making it the perfect joining point for new players. Utilising turn-based strategy combat, players will raise armies and wield spells in solo and multiplayer battles.

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon
This open-world RPG from developer Questline landed in early 2025 and is based upon Arthurian Legends. Players will “explore a world stuck in everlasting Autumn”. This prologue lasts for up to two hours. “Find your way out of prison, escape the Red Death, and leave the island for the shores of Avalon,” the synopsis teases. The full game offers up to 70 hours of RPG fun.

Wanderburg adds a cosy gaming element into the mix as players build and control a castle on wheels. There’s a Studio Ghibli feel to this medieval roguelike from Randwerk, as you drive your roaming fortress on into battle. “Devour entire villages, build your modular arsenal of siege weapons and arcane machinery as you grow with every stronghold you crush.” The full game launched earlier this year.

Scriptorium: Master of Manuscripts
Scriptorium: Master of Manuscripts is yet another 2026 launch. This unusual game sees players run a manuscript workshop where they’ll need to illustrate manuscripts using a wide array of tools. Sitting at a 96% Very Positive rating, it’s clearly a hit.

The long-awaited remake of Gothic is finally due to land later this year but ahead of this acclaimed RPG’s comeback, you can enjoy its very generous demo. Titled the Nyras Prologue, this demo is actually a unique prequel, featuring content not present in the full game. Players will step into the shoes of an inmate on their first day in Gothic’s prison colony in this standalone offering.

Ending with something a tad different, The Artisan of Glimmeth is a relaxing puzzle game set within a medieval-inspired world. Created by Lunarch Studios, players will need to restore coloured stained glass in a kingdom set high above the clouds. The full game launched last month and boasts a 99% review score on Steam.
It’s not all about freebies. These events are also a good opportunity to see if decent offers are available for anything pre-existing on your wishlist.
The excellent Middle-Earth: Shadow of War can currently be bought for just £3.49, for example, while Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree is on offer for £17.49, slashing 50% off its price.
Get the most out of the event while it lasts.
