Skyrim meets The Witcher in epic new RPG you can play for free now

It's like Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, except the combat is actually fun

This upcoming RPG looks like a perfect blend between the likes of The Witcher 3, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, and it can be yours to play for free… if you’re lucky.

No offence to the first-person RPG crowd, but there’s just something about a third-person RPG that calls to me.

Call me a freak if you like, but I’m that weirdo that plays Bethesda games like Fallout 4 and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered in third person by choice.

Maybe they were technically designed to be played in first person but… I just like seeing my character properly while they’re all kitted out and wading through the chaos.

That’s why today’s example of an upcoming Steam game really calls to me, because this looks like the RPG I’ve been dreaming of for years– and apparently that’s the case for the devs behind the project too.

Of Ash and Steel is an medieval action RPG from developer Fire & Frost and publisher tinyBuild, and something about the gameplay in the trailers for this just looks right.

The combat looks weighty, the environments look dark and uninviting, and the skills look like they properly pack a punch. I dunno man, I’m just into it.

That’s why it’s a good job that the devs behind Of Ash and Steel have just revealed that you can currently sign up for a playtest for the game, although it sounds like the slots available are somewhat limited.

However, considering there isn’t a release date in sight for this one, it would appear that signing up for a playtest and crossing your fingers is the best shot you’ll have at playing this one in 2025.

Wish me luck folks, I’m gonna sign up now and hope that we’re not all collectively too late…
