This brand new free game on Steam combines two of my absolute favourite things: Pokémon, and just doing nothing while I stare at my desktop.
I’ve noticed a bit of a trend appearing on Steam lately that I am kind of on board with, because it sort of takes the monotony out of the old 9 to 5; desktop games.
Now, in case you have no idea what I’m talking about, here’s the run down: these games essentially allow you to get on with other tasks and still play something at the same time, because they’re designed to tuck themselves away at the bottom of your screen.

Depending on which one you play, they’re somewhere between a regular game with, y’know, gameplay, and an idle game, but it seems today’s example is more of the former kind of example.
Whimside, from developer Toadzillart and publisher Future Friends Games, is a creature collector game that neatly tucks itself just above the start menu at the bottom of your screen, and it just got a brand new demo.
Obviously the main aim of the game is to catch as many “Whimlings” as possible, but it sounds like there’s a lot more to Whimside than just ‘Mon catching - such as decorating your sick ranch.
“As you progress, you’ll unlock a variety of decorations, empowering you to personalize your own whimsical haven,” reads the Steam description, “from a peaceful garden to an extravagant outdoor playground! Your favorite Whimlings can also settle in, keeping you company throughout the day.”

There’s also some kind of fusion mechanic, which sounds kind of cool. Reminds me of the Pokémon Fusion romhack that was super popular a couple of years back.
The full release for Whimside is set to drop sometime in Q3 of this year, but it looks like there’s a pretty hefty amount of stuff to do in the demo until then. I’ll be keeping my eye on this one.
