The term ‘friendslop’ has been all over the place recently. Just about any game you should play with friends has earned the title, and while they’re not all winners, we have high hopes for this one.
Inspired by the co-op mountain-climber Peak, this Steam game swaps your vertical exploration for horizontal, and tasks you and your friends with navigating a lazy river surrounded by zombies.
I went hands-on with Lazy River at Summer Game Fest, and this is definitely the type of game I’d load up with a few friends.
For a brief synopsis, a local waterpark has been infected with a virus that’s turned visitors into mindless zombies, but they can’t touch water.

So in order to escape the park, you and your friends need to build a raft out of inflatable tube floats, before arming yourself with water guns and pool noodles and setting off down the lazy river.
Along the way, you’ll find shacks containing food to keep you nourished, but you’ll also attract zombies who’ll try to jump onto your raft and eat your brains.

To fend them off, you can either blast them a few times with a water gun or knock them into the river with a pool noodle for a quicker kill.
Sometimes drones circle overhead as well, which will activate the waterpark’s laser defence system (I have no idea why it has a laser defence system), so you need to bring those down before the alarm is triggered.
What I played was good fun, and I was a big fan of the dolphin dive. If you shoot the ground with your water gun or throw a water balloon at it, then do a dolphin jump, you’ll actually slide around at pace, which is good for a quick getaway.
Like Peak, Lazy River feels like one of those games you can either get really invested in and try to make it all the way to the end or just do a few casual runs while you chat in Discord.
Most of the time the term friendslop is thrown around like an insult, but I actually find it sort of endearing. As long as you’re having fun with your friends, it’s a good game, right?
Lazy River doesn't currently have a release date, but it'll be entering early access soon on PC via Steam.
