Detroit: Become Human developer, Quantic Dream has announced a new free-to-play multiplayer combat game coming to Steam.
In 2005, Fahrenheit (or Indigo Prophecy as it’s known in the US) on PC, PlayStation 2 and Xbox was a very narratively driven, QTE-infested game that wasn't for everyone but it had me immersed from the get-go.
We were then treated to Heavy Rain on the PlayStation 3 in 2010, an all-time favourite game of mine, followed by Beyond: Two Souls in 2013. Both of which followed the similar gameplay and storytelling formula of Fahrenheit.

The studio's most recent game is Detroit: Become Human, released in 2018 on the PlayStation 4. While I also really enjoyed that game and completed numerous times like the others, it too was very similar in terms of gameplay and storytelling from the studio's previous work.
However, aside from the studio's Star Wars game that is still in the works, its next game is something very different. Well, at least for Quantic Dream.
The new multiplayer game in question is called Spellcasters Chronicles, and it’s a free-to-play combat game that is said to blend “action and strategy by inviting players to command magical chaos in spectacular 3v3 battles.”
Matches will take place over 25 minutes in a multiplayer arena played in a third-person perspective with players being powered by magic with added strategic deck-building mechanics.
What’s more, you’ll be able to get an early taste of the game when the beta for Spellcasters Chronicles releases on PC via Steam by the end of this year.

“We are honored and excited to introduce Spellcasters Chronicles to players today, developed in our Paris and Montreal studios, ” said David Cage, founder and president of Quantic Dream.
“Stepping into a new genre with a fresh artistic approach has been both a challenge and a source of growth, allowing us to evolve as a team. We now look forward to shaping the game further with players’ feedback and to perfecting this journey together.”
“With the first closed beta kicking off later this year, the studio is thrilled to invite players to take part in early testing, share their feedback, and help shape the game’s evolution.”
Whether Spellcasters Chronicles goes on to be a success, remains to be seen, because we all know that garnering success in the free-to-play market is no easy task. I guess the beta might provide us with a good indication of its prospects.

No full release date has been announced for Spellcasters Chronicles, but given that its beta isn't launching until later this year, it’s most likely that the game itself won't release until next year, at least.
