The future of PlayStation is looking bright as a recent collaboration hints at future consoles “pushing the boundaries” of graphics.

It may still be a while until we can get our hands on Sony’s next console, especially as many of us feel as though we have hardly had any time with the PlayStation 5.

However, all good things must come to an end and whether we like it or not, the PlayStation 6 is on the way.

That being said, a recent collaboration between PlayStation and AMD may just give us the reassurance we need as this could mean the ability to “push the boundaries” when it comes to graphics in future releases.

The combined project is known as Project Amethyst and it aims to achieve new heights by pushing the capabilities of machine learning.

The collaboration took off in earnest recently when PlayStation console architect Mark Cerny met up with AMD lead Jack Huynh which led to a series of social media posts explaining what Project Amethyst means for gamers.

"Project Amethyst is a co-engineering effort between PlayStation and AMD focused on machine learning-driven graphics and gameplay innovations, built around two core goals," Huynh shared.

This will include "designing an architecture optimised specifically for machine learning workloads in gaming" with their second goal centering around "developing high-quality neural networks that push the boundaries of real-time game graphics".

Put simply, the collaboration aims to show that “machine learning” will be the key to unlocking greater graphical potential in future releases and it is perhaps no coincidence that this is taking place when Sony is reportedly hard at work on development for the PlayStation 6.

We have already seen recent releases, such as Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, show what the PlayStation 5 is capable of when it comes to graphics so we can only imagine what this Sony and AMD collaboration will mean for the future of gaming.

Now only time will tell.
