PS5 users are being gifted with a free new-gen update for one of the PlayStation 4’s best games released in 2017.

Ninja Theory, the studio behind the likes of Heavenly Sword, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and DmC: Devil May Cry (2014), released the critically acclaimed Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice in 2017.

“Set in the Viking age, a broken Celtic warrior embarks on a haunting vision quest into Viking Hell to fight for the soul of her dead lover,” reads the synopsis of the 2017 game.

“Created in collaboration with neuroscientists and people who experience psychosis, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice will pull you deep into Senua’s mind.”

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice was originally released on PC and PlayStation 4, before arriving on Xbox One the following year. However, in 2018, Microsoft acquired Ninja Theory, essentially making the IP first-party on Xbox.

In 2021, the Xbox Series X/S would benefit from a free new-gen update boosting the game's visuals and performance. Unfortunately, no such update arrived on PlayStation 5, despite being backwards compatible.

Thankfully, this week, Ninja Theory announced that an enhanced version of its sequel, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, is not only coming to PC and Xbox Series X/S but also PlayStation 5.

The Deluxe Edition of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II includes Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice optimised for PlayStation 5, as well as the original soundtrack.

Alongside that reveal was the announcement that an enhanced version of Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice will finally be coming to PlayStation 5, and it will be a free update for those who own the game on PlayStation 4.

This improved version of the 2017 game is also bundled with Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II Deluxe Edition.

The enhanced version of Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice will be released as a separate purchase and via a free update on 12 August 2025. This is the same release date as Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II Enhanced.

As a side note, much like Alien: Isolation and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice on the Nintendo Switch is fantastic and is well worth checking out, especially if you like playing games on the go.
