With many PlayStation 4 users having upgraded to the PlayStation 5 over recent years, many of us have been hoping that some of our PS4 titles will make that upgrade with us.

Well, it seems as though that is the case for one hit PlayStation 4 title as one much-loved 2016 real-time tactics video game not only arrives on the PlayStation 5 this week, but will also be free to download.

The game in question is none other than Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, a stealth-oriented real-time tactics title from Mimimi Productions.

As mentioned, Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun was first released on the PlayStation 4 back in 2016 but now it has finally made its way to the PS5 and PS5 Pro.

Not only that, but those who already own Blades of the Shogun on the PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade to the PS5 version for free instead of having to purchase it again at full price.

It makes sense that this release comes now following the launch of the game’s standalone expansion Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun – Aiko’s Choice launching on the PS5 on 6 December.

After all, it would be silly to be able to play the expansion on the current-gen console but not the base game.

However, it is also worth noting that Aiko’s Choice has previously been available on PC since 2021 so it is not new by any means.

It is currently unclear why both the base game and DLC are coming to PlayStation 5 but it is no doubt that this will bring a new legion of fans, and especially existing fans considering that they will get their hands on that free upgrade.

Set in Japan during the Edo period, Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun still sits at an "Overwhelmingly Positive" rating on Steam, alongside a 85 user score on Metacritic which just goes to show it is not one to sleep on.

You will be in charge of handling a group of trained specialists whose job it is to protect the new Shogun who has seized control over the land.

With each offering their own set of skills, abilities and stories, you will embark on a journey of assassination, espionage and sabotage as you do what it takes to keep the land under peace.

In the meantime, Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun is currently available at a 90% discount over on Steam alongside a free demo so if you want to try it out ahead of its PS5 launch, make sure to take advantage of this deal.
