PS4 Beloved RPG is Getting the Remaster Treatment in 2026

Does it need a remaster?

A beloved PlayStation RPG from the PS4 era is getting a remaster in 2026, but it may spark a mixed reaction from fans.

Sometimes, it can feel like too many games are getting remastered or remade, with not enough new entries in an established series or even a brand-new IP. To be fair to publishers and developers, remastering or remaking a fan-favourite is at least a safer option in an industry that cannot guarantee success.

Over the years, we’ve seen some fantastic remakes, such as Resident Evil 2 (2019), Silent Hill 2 (2024) and Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, to name a few remakes. Obviously, I’ve missed a lot of names there, but more to my point, there have been so many remakes, I’d be here all day otherwise.

As for remasters, these can spark more heated discussions. For example, a remake is often built from the ground up on a new engine, introducing new areas, lore, and/or improving its gameplay.

Are remasters good or bad?

Remasters, on the other hand, can either be straightforward ports with just a resolution increase or developers can go the extra mile by improving the framerate, as well as implementing other quality-of-life enhancements.

Speaking of remasters, as reported by Comicbook.com, the popular PlayStation 4 RPG in question that is getting a remaster is none other than Tales of Berseria from Bandai Namco.

On the aggregate website, Metacritic, Tales of Berseria scored a very respectable 79 from critics and 8.0 from users. So, this remaster announcement should be a cause of celebration, right? Well, perhaps not everyone will see it that way.

The thing is, Tales of Berseria was only released in 2016 on the PlayStation 4 and is backwards compatible on PlayStation 5.

Sure, the PS5 remaster might look and play better, and have some additional bells and whistles, but only being less than a decade old, it feels a bit too soon for a remaster (not that it bothers Naughty Dog).

What’s more, the backwards compatible version that you can buy right now on the PlayStation Store is only £15.99 at full price, and it’s been much cheaper than that in sales. The new remastered version has an RRP of £35.99.

In fairness to the remaster, it does have improved visuals and performance, gameplay enhancements and is bundled with plenty of DLC.

I guess it’s a case of weighing the positives and negatives as to whether this is a worthwhile purchase. Saying that, I’ve purchased every Resident Evil remaster released, so who am I to question that?

There are also tons of Tales games that could have been better candidates that may deserve the remaster/remake treatment more, that are stuck on older generation consoles. But it is what it is.

Tales of Berseria Remastered will be released on PlayStation 5 on 27 February 2026, the same launch day as Resident Evil Requiem.
