PlayStation Plus Users Urged To Cancel Subscriptions For Very Good Reason

It might be worth setting an alarm

PlayStation Plus subscribers have been urged to cancel their subscriptions for a very good reason.

Especially with all the continuous price hikes, subscribing to the upper tiers of PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass is not cheap. Although they do offer tons of video games as well as many other perks that far exceed the value of everything offered in the service.

Still, some months are financially tighter than others and having the money to pay for the PlayStation Plus Premium and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate tiers isn't always easy, whether we pay monthly, quarterly or yearly.

Thankfully, at various points in the year, there are promotions that we can take advantage of that offer a tidy discount on the Sony and Microsoft subscription services.

However, like many promotions, inside and outside of the video game spectrum, many of those are for “new customers only”, which always sucks. With that in mind, Reddit user SoloWingPixy88 has warned PlayStation Plus subscribers to turn off auto-renewal billing.

“Not sure if many remember the PlayStation debacle last year coming into Black Friday, where PlayStation offered significant discounts to new customers but screwed existing customers,” they said. “It serves you no benefit to have auto-billing enabled.”

“There's no benefit to having auto-renew on. All deals recently have been for new customers, so if you have your subscription renewed, you'd still be a current customer,” added Brilliant-Ranger-356.

Brilliant-Ranger-356 makes a very interesting point.

Essentially, what they're saying is that you should cancel auto-renew, let your subscription expire in the next month, and then you're far more likely going to be eligible to take advantage of any Black Friday deals that appear.

If there are no deals this year, which would be incredibly unusual, you can just start up your subscription again.

However, it's far more likely you'll be able to nab anything from 10% to 30% off, perhaps even more.

Occasionally, there are also deals for existing users but it's much less common. These typically aim at getting you upgraded from the Extra or Essential tiers to Premium by offering a discounted upgrade fee.

New customer discounts are more geared at discounting all tiers.

When are the Black Friday sales?

Typically, the Black Friday sales take place during Thanksgiving week in the USA, which will be around 28 November 2025.

As we all know, there are always pre-Black Friday sales for the weeks leading up to it, which kind of makes the whole spectacle quite pointless, especially when those sales tend to last weeks, rather than a weekend.
