PlayStation Plus users praise must-play 'classic RPG'

PlayStation Plus users praise must-play 'classic RPG'

They don't get more "classic" than this RPG

PlayStation Plus is getting a lot of slack lately, even more so since it dropped its November games. Yet, there are classic titles to be discovered if only you can look past all the noise of disgruntled gamers.

One such game getting much praise from PS Plus users is Grandia, a quote-unquote “classic RPG”. It’s currently one of the 14 free games the November update has to offer, and while some have been sleeping on this gem, others have been quick to discover it has hidden depths.

Looking for another classic RPG on PS Plus? 2023 gem Sea of Stars should be to your liking.

“No game, outside of maaaaybe Skies of Arcadia, has given me that whimsical feeling of adventure quite like Grandia,” said one fan on a Grandia Reddit thread. “You really feel like you’re on a journey, and it’s about that and not the destination. Fantastic game, easily the best in the series.”

In case you’ve never heard of this great RPG – how very dare you?! – Grandia first launched in 1997 and was then re-released in 2019 as Grandia HD. On Steam you’ll learn that the game has a “very positive” rating, with players entranced by the action oozing from its dated, blocky pixels. And yes, the remaster still has dated graphics, albeit slightly more polished than the 1990s original.

Is its aesthetic the reason why so many aren’t initially seeing the joy in this game, with some PlayStation gamers even threatening to cancel their membership after the latest games collection? We hope not because that would be a crying shame, as one fan reaffirms when declaring their love for the game. “One of my favourite RPGs ever. Don't wanna spoil it for you. You're gonna love it! Just remember Justin is always in your party so he is always a good choice for things like magic power-ups if you are unsure who to build.”

With Grandia still available for free, now is the time to experience what it feels like to play a game that has made others feel like they’re on a “true adventure”.
